What strikes you first when you hear the word “hostel life”? I know the feeling of loneliness and hardships, isn’t it? But hang on; this fact is not always the same for all. For many, this hostel life has been full of fun and an experience that a person should have at least ones in a lifetime. For numerous students, the hostel life fun has even become a golden period which they cherish even till now after growing old. Similarly, for me, also, my hostel life experience is just unforgettable. Today, I would like to share some of these nostalgic fans of hostel life that I still miss and will always remain in my heart.
Late Night Group Studies
It was so refreshing to study in a group till late at night. It was the best part of hostel life. While considering if you don’t understand something or have doubts, then you can ask your friends and take their help. You would enjoy the company of your friends who made the study even more accessible. Also, it was enjoyable watching one friend sleeping with a book in hand, few grumbling on why the hell exams are there? One getting tensed and irritated on forgetting a few points, clicking funny pictures of others while studying and a lot more. Aah, the list might never end.
Night 1:30 Maggie
How can one forget the mess food, so watery and tasteless with burnt roties? That time Maggie used to become an ultimate source for filling empty stomachs when one felt hungry in the middle of the night. I swear that point of time the value of Maggie is just priceless.
How to Manage Money?
Life teaches everything when you are on your own. Being at home, when you got pocket money, you thought of spending it lavishly. But, what if you are out alone and you get a certain amount monthly? Here comes the lesson of money management. You come to know the value of money and remain very careful while spending it as you are aware that this amount used for the entire month. Moreover, you learn different ways of saving money.
Celebrations and Parties
Being hostellers, no specific reason for celebration was ever needed. No matter whether it was someone’s birthday, India-Pakistan match, someone winning a race, festival or someone getting a new gadget, you would get to see all kinds of parties hereBeing far from home, these little celebrations lightened up the mood and brought a new passion and zeal in everyone. Moreover, there was no one to stop you from doing so.
A Lesson of Being Independent
Since you were a kid, there were people always around taking care of you. Your parents took care of your food, homework, bathing, make you ready for school and to lift you when you would fall. But when you live in a hostel, life changes completely. You have no one to pamper you anymore. Also, you have to do all these things on your own and decide what is suitable for yourself. It is the place where you learn a lesson about being independent and face all sorts of circumstances.
Crazy New Friends
Staying at home, you can only see people and friends of their own culture. On the contrary, being in a hostel, you come across many new people and make new friends. You come to know about new cultures, lifestyles, and behaviour of people around. Here you get friends that know you in and out. They know about your crazy habits, how to change your mood and also how to irritate you at times. But still, they will be with you and share all your moments, be it happy or sad. They only will be the ones taking care of you like a family when you are sick. And at times these, saint looking friends would only turn into a devil with horns when you have to go out for a date or night party without them.
Value of little ecstasies of Life
How can one miss this? Watching movies continuously the entire night, playing carom, cards, the endless and nonsense chat and gossiping about girls or boys late night were one of the best moments of hostel life. Amid tensions and loneliness, even if you get a little happiness, it means a lot. It taught us the real value of the small pleasures of life. Though these pleasures were for a short time, they very refreshing and energising.
Creepy Nicknames
Haha…. everyone in the hostel from warden to the watchman had nicknames. Their original names ever called no one. And I bet it was entertaining to call others by their funny nicknames like Chota packet or millimetre.
